President's Message

It is with great pleasure I welcome
everyone to the 25th anniversary of the Dairy Town
Classic! Who would have thought when Peter McAleenan and
Ron Harvey got together in 1987 to organize “a
basketball tournament”, that it would evolve into the
premier event it is today!
Over these past 25 years it has taken the ideas, vision and
dedication of hundreds of volunteers for the Dairy Town
Classic to grow from an eight-team, men-only tournament
into a 12-team event for men and ladies, complete with
pre-tournament games which involve and showcase our
local basketball talent; a summer basketball camp; and
financial support to our local basketball youth through
bursaries and scholarships. It goes without saying that
without these volunteers, the Dairy Town Classic would
not be possible.
As with any successful organization, the key to success is
through a dynamic individual, who has the drive and
energy to continue organizing year after year. It was
without a doubt that for our 25th anniversary Gale
Jeffrey and his wife Carol were to be selected as
honorary chairpersons for the 2012 tournament. It was
through Gale’s leadership that the DTC was brought to
its highest level. Gale is instrumental in keeping the
Sussex basketball family informed and spends countless
hours on creating opportunities for our local basketball
youth. It’s not surprising when you walk into any of the
Sussex gyms to watch a basketball game – Gale is there.
When the Dairy Town Classic started in 1987, we were
fortunate to have the support from local businesses and
organizations who believed in the vision for a
high-caliber basketball tournament. Among those sponsors
were Pizza Delight, MILK, CJCW and Fairway; we are proud
and grateful they have been our teammates for 25
tournaments! We are thankful to all our sponsors and I
invite you to look at our sponsorship board in the SRHS
gym and join me in appreciation for their generous
support.
On behalf of the 2012 DTC committee, I hope all players
experience great basketball, long-lasting friendships
and awesome memories!
