The Dairy Town Classic committee had its beginnings
in November, 1986, when Ron Harvey, and Peter McAleenan
launched an idea to create a high quality boys
basketball tournament that would provide the citizens of
Sussex with the opportunity to watch top-notch
basketball in Sussex and also provide competition for
the home team.
The first step was to find major sponsors to help
finance the tournament and that is where the Allan
Charters, New Brunswick Milk Marketing Board and Pizza
Delight came into the picture.
The first six DTC's had eight teams in a single
elimination format.
In the fall of 1992, the committee decided to add a
girls section, thus making Sussex the only community in
Atlantic Canada at the time to host a 12-team boys and
girls tourney.
Other activities have been added since 1987, including
summer camps, clinics, junior varsity, middle school and
mini games, bursaries for players and coaches,
scholarships, and funds for schools and programs.
